Andover is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts. Because of its location, Andover, MA is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Massachusetts-New Hampshire metropolitan statistical area. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Andover, MA has growing population of 33,201.
The Massachusetts General Court set aside land in present-day Essex County for an inland plantation in 1642. To inspire settlement, early colonists were offered tax immunity for 3 years. That same year, John Woodbridge established the first permanent settlement in the Andover area. By May of 1646, the settlement was incorporated as a town. Many residents came from the town of Andover in England, and subsequently the town was named Andover, MA.
